Could it be that the reason Everton seem so determined to appoint Rafa Benitez despite the strength of opposition, is because the club is no longer willing to find major transfer spending?

As the new manager saga rumbles on again into yet another weekend, the overwhelming favourite for the job remains the controversial Spaniard and although they haven’t yet apparently finally decided, Everton still appear to be ready to go ahead with him, whatever the reaction.

I think some Toffees supporters are perplexed as to why the club are prepared to risk such a backlash from their supporters by bringing in Benitez.

There are purely football reasons why the board might think he’s the best bet and we’ve looked at some these. In particular his track record of winning major trophies all over Europe, attracting and handling high-profile players and his tactical acumen.

In fact all the reasons why Everton hired Carlo Ancelotti. Plus he’s got bags of Premier League experience, which does seem a major factor.

But of course unlike the Italian whose career he mirrors in many ways, Benitez has all that Liverpool baggage round his neck.

Anyway, there might be another important reason why the Blues are pressing ahead with an appointment that will cause a huge negative reaction amongst many Evertonians (although not all) and that is the club’s precarious financial position.
