With an announcement about who (well we almost certainly know who) will be the new Everton manager not likely until early next week, new player links continue.

The latest is a rumour that Everton are keeping tabs on Juventus full-back Mattia DeSciglio who has been out on loan this season at French side Lyon.

DeSciglio is the latest in a long line of full-backs to be associated with a move to Goodison Park this summer.

The most recent is Denzel Dumfries who the Toffees have been tracking as he excels for the Netherlands in the Euros. That has led to links to other European giants such as Bayern Munich, although their interest appears to have cooled.

It’s becoming less likely the Blues will get a player with Dumfries’ profile and given the uncertainty over who will be the club’s manager, other previous targets such as Max Aarons are probably unrealistic too.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

DeSciglio is a 28-year-old full-back who can play on the left or right of the defence and also in the middle. He’s a fiesty player strong in both defence and attack, who does have a bit of a discipline issue though.

The Italian defender is one of a number of players who the Serie A club seem very ready to sell this summer along with other players linked to Everton such as Merih Demiral.

Everton’s need for a right-back is clear and it will surely be a core transfer priority for Rafa Benitez, or whoever else is eventually installed in the Goodison hotseat.

There is another element to this now with the injury to Lucas Digne. We still don’t know for sure how bad the Frenchman’s injury is and whether it’s only going to affect his participation in the rest of the Euros tournament or of it will impact the start of the new Premier League season.

That injury together with all the ongoing uncertainty over whether Seamus Coleman can stay fit and healthy himself, moving as quickly as possible to get a decent full-back in is getting more and more urgent.
