We are nearly one month into the summer transfer market but the movement on the Everton side has been the bare minimum. That’s partly due to the extensive research and efforts put by the club board in hiring a new manager and partly due to the ongoing International tournaments. Several transfer targets have been mentioned with Denzel Dumfries being one of the prime targets.
Now, the search for a manager has concluded with Rafael Benitez arriving at the helm that was vacated by Carlo Ancelotti on June 1st, 2021, Everton director of football Marcel Brands can work in tandem with Benitez to identify transfer targets and make attempts to sign them.
Everton do need a successor to Seamus Coleman who has shouldered the duty of being the primary right back in the Toffees defence for over a decade. At 32, he isn’t getting any younger, quicker or more agile. The club needs to look for the future and bringing in a right back this summer should be a high priority.
Dumfries, a transfer target for the Toffees, has caught the attention of many through his splendid performances in the group stages of the Euros this summer. The PSV Eindhoven defender has remarked in the past how his style would fit in the Premier League and is ready to take the leap of faith. The Royal Blues were considered one of the favourites to land the Dutchman, who is managed by super-agent Mino Raiola. However, it appears that Everton are no longer ahead in the race to sign the 25 year old and have fallen behind Inter Milan.
Inter Milan leading the race for Everton target Denzel Dumfries
As per De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen (via Sport Witness), Inter have jumped ahead of Everton and are in pole position to sign Dumfries. The Nerazzurri have reached an agreement with PSG for the transfer of Achraf Hakimi, as per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. The Italian club will receive €60 million and another €10 million in add-ons.
This is a sizeable profit on Hakimi who arrived at Inter a year ago for €40 million. The Nerazzurri will now focus on bringing in a replacement for Hakimi which appears to be Dumfries. Raiola handles Dumfries’ profile and prefers that his client goes to Inter Milan rather than Everton.

"I think I know more or less, yes. Everton simply had the best papers. Only you have to have money to get someone. And Raiola is, of course, close with Inter. What I understood, Dumfries would be on his way to Inter with Raiola now. As we speak.Inter have the best papers to bring him in. They have sold Achraf Hakimi, so they are really looking for a right-back. It’s a bit of a similar type. Raiola is going to cash in big on that. He was sent off with fifteen million. Everything that comes above that is split. That’s just like with Berghuis and Pogba. He walks in whistling if he wasn’t already in. (via Voetbal Primeur)"
Raiola’s reluctance could be something to do with Moise Kean, who is also managed by Raiola. Kean struggled for chances at Everton in his debut year before he was provided with an escape route by Raiola to PSG on loan where he excelled in eighth gear.
Brands has deep connections with PSV and if Everton are to snatch Dumfries from the hands of Inter, the Everton director of football will have to use all his might to do so. Because, at this moment, it appears that the 25 year old is headed to Guiseppe Meazza stadium.
Will the Toffees still manage to sign Denzel Dumfries?
