With new Everton manager Rafa Benitez settling into his job and beginning to get to know his players, there’s been a twist in one transfer saga involving a potential recruit.

That player is Matheus Nunes of Sporting Lisbon who Everton are supposedly actively chasing and have been for nearly a month now.

It looked at one point, at least according to some reports, that the Toffees were close to securing the Brazilian midfielder’s services.

But then stories emerged that the Blues weren’t perhaps so keen and that Nunes might not be coming to Goodison Park anytime soon.

Now once are again the media are reporting that Everton are still keen on Nunes and will still be ready and willing to compete for his signature.

Nunes is a young talent who would certainly match the sort of profile of player that Everton are likely to be interested in.

He’s young, energetic and mobile footballer who excels at carrying the ball forward whether from a wider or central position. These are all qualities the Toffees need more of.

At 22 he’s still maturing and perhaps hasn’t got the strength and physical power most suited for the Premier League but he’s certainly a player who is well-regarded and likely on the radar of some significant European clubs. If Everton want him they will probably have to move quickly.

Two other young players who have excelled at the Euros are predictably being linked with the Blues as the summer transfer window begins to heat up in earnest now the tournament is coming towards it’s conclusion.

They are forwards Patrik Schick and Kasper Dolberg. Both players have done well for their respective countries, Czech Republic and Denmark, and look very likely to be moving on to pastures new in this transfer window.

Schick is a player we’ve looked at recently as a possible option for Everton as he possesses the qualities and ability to do well in the Premier League.

And with rumours still circulating that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is on the radar of several English clubs, perhaps rather than coming to provide some competition and another options wide, he might be needed to replace the England international.

Assuming that doesn’t happen – and it still seems very unlikely – he would still represent a good investment as Everton are very thin in terms of striking alternatives and as mentioned he is able to play in a wider position too.

The other forward player here, Dolberg, has been compared by an ex-England star, among others, to one of Europe’s best ever centre-forwards; Marco Van Basten who lit up Euro 88 for the Netherlands, scoring perhaps the best goal ever seen in the final.

That’s some compliment then as Van Basten is one of the best strikers I’ve ever seen with his compound of pace, power, technical excellence and outstanding striking instincts.

Leaving hyperbole aside, Dolberg has impressed as the Danes made an unexpected but fully deserved run to tomorrow’s semi-final. Agian that means he’s probably being tracked by a number of major clubs.
