It looks as though Everton are getting nearer to finally sealing a deal for the PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands full-back Denzel Dumfries.

This transfer saga has been dragging on for weeks after Everton initially registered their interest in the Dutch player soon after Euro 2020 began.

He had been in fine form thoughout the tournament showing the sort of pace, energy and attacking support on the right hand side that the Blues definately need a lot more of.

The PSV player scored two goals and made an assist during the competition and was a constant threat for the Orangie until their elimination by the Czech Republic in the last 16.

Not suprisingly Dumfries caught the eye of several European clubs not just Everton and the rumour mill soon went into overdrive with stories of where he might be moving to after the Euros.

The main rival to the Toffees for his signature became Inter Milan and it looked as though the Italian giants and current Serie A champions had the inside track with Dumfries apparently favouring a move to sunny Italy over Merseyside.

And it looked like Everton were resigned to losing out on him and had revived their interest in alternatives like Norwich City’s Max Aarons.

Now though it does appear at least according to these reports, that Inter themselves are backing out as they don’t want to pay the sort of money PSV are asking (around £15 million or so) and that is leaving the way clear, hopefully, for the Blues to get the deal done.

Dumfries certainly seems to tick the boxes for what Everton need with his defensive solidity and attacking instincts making him the ideal solution for that right-back/wing-back position.

I also think he might be ideal player to enable the Blues to get the most out of James Rodriguez, if the Colombian stays.

Well supposedly new manager Rafa Benitez is sold on Dumfries too and wants to see the transfer through so he just might be the first signing through the door under the new regime.

I hope the club can get moving with their transfers very soon as the Toffees need to get the players they want in as quickly as possible with a pre-season tournament in the States coming up and then the new Premier League campaign starting in exactly a month’s time.

Benitez is holding his first press conference as Everton boss this afternoon so perhaps there will be more of a hint or two of what he is thinking transfer-wise.
