Goalkeepers:
Jordan Pickford: Keep
There are no doubts over this. Jordan Pickford has done a marvellous job in winning the support and confidence of the management and the fans. Last year there were several doubts over him but following a strong 2020-21 season and an excellent Euro 2020 campaign, his critics are left scrambling deleting words of slander, that’s how superb the 27 year old has been.
Even though Begovic has been signed, he’s not in real contention to challenge Pickford for the starting role week in week out. Pickford’s season ended on a high note which will further boost his confidence before the start of the 2021-22 season.
Joao Virginia: Loan
With Begovic joining the Toffees, Virginia will remain the third choice keeper. Last season he did start a Carabao Cup game in the early first half of the season. Due to injury concerns to Pickford and Olsen, the Portuguese also played one half of a Premier League game while also starting in the FA Cup quarter-finals against Manchester City.
In these rare first team opportunities, the 21 year old shined and showed some tremendous goalkeeping skills. Loaning him out to a side where he can get more playing time under his belt can prove to be beneficial for his growth. However, if Virginia does stay, the experienced Begovic can provide counsel and aid his development at Goodison Park.
