Would Ward-Prowse to Spurs make Winks Everton move likely

Tottenham are apparently interested in signing Southampton and England midfielder James Ward-Prowse so would that make it more likely Everton will move for Harry Winks?

Everton do ideally need more options in midfield and there have been persistent rumours that the club will sign another player in that position.

One midfielder who has in the past been linked with the Blues is Spurs Harry Winks. Those stories are back and he’s again being mentioned in connection with a move to the Toffees.

In a similar but unrelated rumour today Tottenham and also Aston Villa are supposedly considering to move for Southampton’s England star Ward-Prowse as the Saints prepare to travel to Merseyside to play Everton in Saturday’s season opener.

The Saints player has seen his reputation grow in recent seasons and was expected to be in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the European Championships this summer but somewhat suprisingly he didn’t make the final cut.

He’s a player who has been providing consistently solid performances in the Premier League for a while now and it’s perhaps a little strange that he hasn’t been targetted more consistently by other clubs for a possible transfer before now.

Now Spurs and maybe Aston Villa too are possibly interested in a deal for him and that might make any Everton move for Winks more likely.

Of course I don’t know if any of this is a serious possibilty or not but while there seems little solid basis for a lot of these stories there’s still plenty of links to midfielders doing the rounds.

Winks is one of several English midfielders such ex-Everton youngster Ross Barkely (incidently being linked with a return to Goodison Park) who are players who promised much but haven’t delivered what their talent indicated they might achieve.

The reports around Winks also seem to indicate he is keen to stay in north London so it would need something significant to make him reconsider. Perhaps if Spurs bought in Ward-Prowse that might prove the prompt.

But even if all this is were to be true, I’m not sure what the Spurs player could really offer the Toffees and to be honest he would seem to be a bit too similar to existing English defensive midfielder Tom Davies.
