Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey could start as the centre back pair
Defence:
Left back: Lucas Digne
Lucas Digne has probably been one of the best and most consistent left backs in the league. His crosses in the box create a lot of danger, especially when there are towering figures like Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison waiting for such crosses. The Frenchman has also been defensively sound but can create a big impact in the final third, by darting crosses into the box.
Centre back: Michael Keane
There have been reports stating that Rafa Benitez is searching for a new centre back as he doesn’t trust Yerry Mina. However, Keane is a key component in the Everton defence and if no leader arrives in the rearguard, Keane will be the heart of the backline. The Englishman had a highly successful last season on an individual level and will want to maintain that level this season too, under a new manager.
Centre back: Ben Godfrey
Ben Godfrey is determined and ambitious ahead of the new season. He was simply larger than life last season, putting hearty tackles in, making aggressive interceptions and winning balls in the defensive half. It might even be a bar debate whether he was the signing of the season or not? This is another massive season for him as he could potentially partner Keane and become Benitez’s first choice.
Right back: Seamus Coleman
Seamus Coleman recently signed a contract extension, extending his stay at Goodison until 2023. The Irishman has been at Goodison for over a decade and for many has already attained the legend status.
Everton are searching for a long term successor to Coleman but there have been more disappointments. Coleman should start at right back, giving adequate support in defence whil also making his presence felt in the attack and build up.
