Reports today claim that Everton are in talks to sign a new right-back having lost out on previous target Denzel Dumfries.

That player is Aurelio Buta who Everton were strongly linked with recently as their long search for a right-back drags on.

The Blues have been in the transfer market for a new player in this position for what seems like an age now.

And while the current incumbant Seamus Coleman had a solid match on Saturday, as we all know the long-serving defender is the wrong side of thirty and very injury-prone.

Everton were keen on signing the Holland star Dumfries after his headline-grabbing performances in the Euros but the Toffees much-debated financial problems meant they have lost out on him as Inter Milan moved in.

Well now Buta has emerged as the next candidate to solve the Blues long-term right-back problem. The story today claims Everton are in talks with the player’s representatives over a move said to be for around £3 million.

I think it’s crucial the Toffees get this situation resolved in the current transfer window. It’s been clear for a while now that Coleman isn’t going to be around forever and the other potential successors like Jonjo Kenny haven’t convinced.

It’s very important for the blance of the side that Everton have a player that can offer the pace and creativity necessary to support the team’s attack.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

We saw in the opening day win over Southampton how important it was to have the balance of a fully fit and firing right-back who possesed the energy and ability to provide width and an overlapping option on the flank.

This is especially critical because just as last season, the Blues have a player on the right of their forward line who naturally tends to come inside.

Last season it was James Rodriguez and now it’s Andros Townsend. Both are left-footed attackers who want to come inside onto that left peg and that means the right-back must be able to effectively cover the space left outside him.

Doing so can also create overloads on the flanks, which will help make Everton’s attacking play more effective and stop opposing teams being able to easily mark the Toffees wingers.

If these reports are true let’s hope the Blues can get the details sorted out quickly and bring Buta in. Although he might not be the first choice for many fans he looks a decent enough player and for that fee would seem a snip.
