Reports today claim Everton and any other interested parties will have to fork out £10 million to secure Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

The Magpies midfielders has been linked repeatedly with a move to Everton and a reunion with his former manager Rafa Benitez.

The Daily Mail claim the northeast club want a reasonable amount to sell the 24-year-old youth team graduate who has twelve months left on his current deal or risk losing him for nothing.

Benitez apparently wants to bring the player he first brought into the Newcastle side to Goodison Park and now he knows what he and the club have to find if they want to make this deal happen.

Longstaff is a defensive midfielder who pops up with the occasional goal as well and Benitez, if he does want to sign him, presumably sees him doing a sitting defensive job in front of his back four allowing the other midfielders esepcially Abdoulaye Doucoure to get forward more.

But to be honest, ten million quid seems a very steep price for a player who basically looks to be a very similar footballer to Tom Davies.

There are other better options if Benitez wants another midfielder although they would cost more and given how much the club’s hands are tied by FFP it is very unlikely without major movement of players out of the door, the Blues will be able to splash the cash this summer.

One of those might be the Fulham player Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa. There are further stories that the Toffees should be looking at him and he would certainly add real energy and impetus to the Everton midfield.

Anguissa is a ball-carrying player who would certainly contribute to the new drive for attacking support from midfield that Benitez is keen to encourage.

With less than two weeks to go before the transfer window closes it’s going to be a nervous time waiting to see if the club can get in the players they need to strengthen adequately for the rest of the season. We wait and see.

Do you think Longstaff is the right player to bring into midfield?
