We keep saying it but the Blues efforts are being constantly undermined by individual mistakes, which almost invariably prove costly and lead to goals.

Yesterday, Benitez sought to reunite Mina and Keane in a partnership that worked well midway through last season when Carlo Ancelotti paired the two of them in a new four centre-back defence to stem a run of bad defeats.

That worked well for a while under Ancelotti but critically that side was playing much more deeply and defensively and there was plenty of pace outside Mina and Keane in that backline as Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate, both obviously primarily central defenders, offered cover from full-back.

But both the full-backs yesterday Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne like to get forward as much as possible and it left Mina and particularly Keane once more exposed at times dealing with quick and skillful fowards like Raphina and Patrick Bamford.

While Mina often seemed preoccupied in a heated personal battle with Bamford, Keane again looked nervous at times and made another mistake that led to a goal being scored against his team as Klich equalised just before halftime.

His lapse in concentration yesterday makes it two games and two errors resulting in two goals and that’s simply not good enough for a first-choice central defender.

This has been a major problem over the past few campaigns as players like Keane and Jordan Pickford make clangers that prove so costly for the team.

The second goal was also preventable had the defending been sharper and the simple stuff has been executed properly.

The long overdue return of Ben Godfrey should help improve this situation as he has the pace and confidence to handle the quickest and trickiest of strikers and should provide greater defensive stability.

But while I imagine Benitez will probably partner his young England defender with Mina, it does look like he still needs to bring in another option in that position given the continuing waywardness of Holgate and the lack of experienced alternatives.

Will he be able to before the transfer window shuts? If not given the evidence of the last two games, it might turn out to be crucial to how this season ultimately unfolds.
