Ex-Spurs defender Serge Aurier is still available as a free agent but if Everton are interested in signing him as cover at full-back, they will face competition from Arsenal.

Aurier was released by Tottenham and as I’ve previously written, while he might not be ideal for what Everton need perhaps he could offer cover for both full-back positions.

The apparent inability of the club to secure another right-back signing before the end of the transfer window is a major failure in transfer policy.

It’s created a major problem for Rafa Benitez, like it did for his predecessors and who may now need to find creative ways to solve it if he is without his first choice starter Seamus Coleman.

Well there is one obvious solution to try and sign a free agent like Aurier who won’t cost a fee and could offer an experienced additional defensive option.

But there are other clubs probably interested and it seems Arsenal are ready to move for him so if the Toffees want to get him they may need to move quickly.

There are several other free agents available perhaps the most intriguing of them is Gaston Ramirez the Uruguay midfielder who has been released by Sampdoria.

Ramirez is a talented if inconsistent midfield playmaker who has actually played in England before with both Middlesborough and Southampton but most recently he has been plying his trade in Italy’s Serie A.

As recently as the 2019-20 season Ramirez notched seven goals not a bad return but he is at least according to his statistics, a player who is erratic and not necessarily very reliable having spent quite a lot of time recently as a substitute.

Well anyway these are the sorts of players that the Blues are now basically reduced to looking at as they no longer have the resources to compete for the sort of player the club might have previously entertained.
