Colombian full-back was ‘offered’ to Everton this summer

The transfer window is over and it’s a quiet weekend with no Premier League action as the international break continues but stories linger about players Everton could have signed.

This one centres on a position that as we all know Everton failed to strengthen; right full-back. According to reports circulating the Toffees were offered the chance to sign Colombian defender Daniel Munoz.

Apparently, Munoz was made available by his current club Genk in Belgium but for some reason Everton decided against a deal, if they were interested in him, I imagine because they weren’t able to afford the fee being quoted at around £13 million.

Obviously, whatever the reason this deal didn’t happen during the window and the Blues go into the rest of the season without another specialist right-back.

It might be a move that can be made in January if the Toffees were still interested in the player although that’s a notoriously difficult month to do transfer deals.

This difficulty will potentially hamper Rafa Benitez’s plans for the team this season and could potentially undermine the fine start to the campaign, as it did last season.

The return after the international break was the moment that Everton’s campaign started to come apart last term.

Going into the first break of the season a year ago, Carlo Ancelotti’s team had begun with a really fast start, which was then seriously undermined by injuries following the internationals.

One of those injuries was to Seamus Coleman who’s absence for significant chunks of the campaign and was one of the reasons forced Ancelotti to reshuffle his team several times over the course of that season.

When he was unavailable it highlighted the weakness of that side of the team with James Rodriguez being dependent on Coleman’s role allowing him to have the kind of impact he had in the first few weeks of the season.

The Colombian attacker is not essential to Benitez’s plans and so a further absence for Coleman might not be so critical but let’s hope it’s not put to the test too much during the rest of the season.
