Everton striker Cenk Tosun is currently recovering from a patella rupture, undergoing surgery and is expected to return to playing football in mid-November. Despite being out of action for long, there has been talk of his future.
The Turk has failed to create a lasting and positive impact at Goodison Park. Arrived for a significant fee of £27 million, Tosun has failed to justify his price tag. 11 goals in 58 games for the Toffees is an extremely poor return for a traditional striker who was known to be fierce in front of goal when he was in Turkey.

Part of his downfall is due to the horrific and unfortunate injuries which have disrupted his rhythm. In two seasons he has had two excruciating injuries, a cruciate ligament tear in 2019-20 and a patella rupture in 2020-21 season, forcing him out of action for over a year in total.
Tosun went out on loan twice, to Crystal Palace and Besiktas, but had to cut short his loan adventure because of injuries. His current contract with Everton expires in June 2022 and there is little chance that he’ll be offered an extension.
Conflicting reports regarding Everton striker Cenk Tosun
In fact, there have been reports suggesting that the Turk is keen to return to Besiktas and is hoping to seal a free transfer in January. The 30 year old had a chance to move in the summer but he intended to stay at Everton and complete his rehabilitation.
The other reason why he didn’t move to Turkey in the summer was that the Black Eagles were offering him €1.5 million a season whereas he earns €3.5 million per year at Everton and signing for the Super Lig giants in summer would have meant that he had to let go of the extra money he could’ve earned.
However, Tosun could join Besiktas in January and is hoping that Everton will allow him to leave on a free transfer. On the other hand, Tosun’s agent, Erkut Sogut, has shed light on the striker’s recovery.
"I hope Cenk Tosun will return to the field even stronger as soon as possible. For this, he continues to work day and night with his private teacher. He has started running and will start training with the ball at his club Everton in a few weeks. He is also very happy to be joining his friends at Everton again. He has one more year contract and will do his best on the field. The success of Everton is very important for Cenk.He is counting down the days to return to the national team as soon as possible and fight with his friends on the field to participate in the World Cup in Qatar. Participating in the World Cup in Qatar is very important for both Turkey and Cenk. (via Fanatik)"
Sogut’s comments hint at Tosun’s desire to continue with the Merseysiders. The Turk has one year left and wants to do his best on the field sums up the stand of the player. The conflicting reports add more uncertainty over his future.
If Tosun is looking for more playing time, he might have to leave Goodison but if he’s ready to remain down the pecking order below Salomon Rondon, he might just see out his contract at Everton. Rafa Benitez will prefer Rondon over Tosun in most cases when it comes to acting as a backup striker.
Until Cenk Tosun recovers, his future will remain a point of discussion.
