Ever since Farhad Moshiri took over, Everton have been known to be lavish spenders in the transfer market but in stark contrast, this season’s summer window saw the Toffees spend only £1.7 million. The transfer business was curtailed by Financial Fair Play and the Profit and Sustainability rules of the Premier League.
After a slightly muted transfer window, the Toffees seem to already be looking at reinforcements for the January transfer window. In one of his press conferences, Rafa Benitez dropped a hint that the Toffees could be active in the transfer market if needed.
There are some areas in the squad that need to be addressed and reinforcements need to be sought at the earliest. For example, Everton are without a backup left back after Niels Nkounkou left on loan. The Toffees have been searching for a long term successor to Seamus Coleman.
However, the rumour mill suggests that Rafa Benitez is eyeing a centre back from Serie A. The Spanish boss is eyeing a major coup and has set his sights on AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.
Rafa Benitez wants to sign Alessio Romagnoli for Everton
According to TEAMtalk, Everton boss Rafa Benitez wants to bolster the team by adding Romagnoli to the rearguard. The Milan defender’s contract runs down next summer and so far the Italian has refused to sign a new contract. The Royal Blues are trying to capitalize on such situation and attempt a major coup.
Everton boss Benitez is eyeing a deal for Romagnoli in January. There are suitors for the 26 year old in Italy with rivals Inter Milan and Juventus both holding interest in the centre back, especially if he’s available on a free transfer next summer. However, Everton are looking to beat the competition by presenting an offer in the January transfer window.
The Toffees seem to be well stacked in defence but Romagnoli on a free transfer or for a modest fee is an enticing deal. Should Everton manage to convince Milan to sell for cheap. Romagnoli’s acquisition could be huge considering they will have a new leader in defence. However, Benitez may then have to offload a centre back as there are already five central defenders in the roster.
The January transfer window opens in a little over 100 days and the rumour mill is already running producing new names. At this point, it is too early to tell whether there is genuine interest or not but if Everton are actually trying to sign Romagnoli, they’ll face competition for sure.
