Yet more speculative transfer rumours claim Everton boss Rafa Benitez will again pursue a deal for Newcastle United player Sean Longstaff in January.

The papers and online media have been full of stories lately about possible new midfield targets for Everton in the new year transfer window.

Longstaff was a player who was strongly linked with a move to Goodison Park this summer but in the end nothing happened and he stayed at St James Park.

Benitez does seem to rate the player highly and would therefore presumably consider him a good addition to his current midfield options.

It’s clear that the Blues need further reinforcements to a still unbalanced and weak squad lacking in the right combination of talent specifically in certain positions.

This has been emphasised again by the team Benitez has been forced to pick for today’s Premier League match at Manchester United, which included several youth team players on the bench again.

The Everton manager’s hands were tied this summer by the club’s seemingly intractable financial problems over FFP and following the Covid restrictions.

As has been the case for several years now it’s important to trim the squad and move on expensive and underperforming players of whom there are a number after years of wastful spending in past transfer windows.

Several players have moved on including the South American’s Bernard and most significantly James Rodriguez whose departure for the middle east just recently has freed up some important resources that Benitez can hopefully use if he wants to in January.

There are also rumours that another midfield player Tom Davies could get a move as well as apparently Crystal Palace are interested in him. A situation like that would obviously free up more additional finances.

Looking at his stats again I’m not convinced Longstaff is the player the Toffees need but then given Benitez’s midas touch in the transfer market with Everton so far, who I am to disagree!

What do you think is Longstaff another midfield option to consider in January?
