Injuries to key players have haunted Everton this season and it doesn’t seem to get any better as another core player, Lucas Digne has suffered an injury. The former Barcelona defender is on international duty with France in the ongoing international break.

The month of September saw Everton reduced to bare bones in terms of squad depth as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, Seamus Coleman, Andre Gomes, Jordan Pickford and Jean-Philippe Gbamin missed games due to injury and fitness issues.

Contract rebel Thierry Small joined Southampton in the summer and backup left back Niels Nkounkou left on loan to Standard Liege in the final days of the summer transfer window. This left the Toffees with no cover at left back. Digne is Everton’s only traditional left back which puts a lot of pressure on the Frenchman.

The former PSG defender did have an injury scare against QPR in the Carabao Cup. When the club was already struggling with lack of quality players as Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, Coleman and Pickford remained injured, Digne’s addition to the treatment table would’ve proven to be a big blow but thankfully Rafa Benitez iterated that it wasn’t too serious.

However, uncertainty once again surrounds Digne’s fitness as he has suffered a hamstring injury on international duty. According to GFFN, the Everton left back will miss the UEFA Nations League finals due to a hamstring injury.

Digne suffered a hamstring injury on Tuesday and upon examination by the France medical staff, they decided to send the 28 year old back to Finch Farm. There has been no official statement yet from Everton which states the seriousness of the injury but if it is serious, thr Toffees could find themselves in deep waters.

Without a proper left back, the Merseysiders may be susceptible on the left side. Ben Godfrey can play as a makeshift left back meanwhile Fabian Delph has also slotted into the role when he was at Manchester City.

Everton have been very unfortunate with injuries especially at the start of the season. Injuries in every department have seen the Toffees compromise heavily in quality on the pitch but still have managed to pull through as players like Andros Townsend, Demarai Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure have stepped up.

Once Digne returns to Everton, there may be more clarity on the Frenchman’s injury and fitness.
