A few days ago, the name of Arnau Comas was mentioned in the English media as the Barcelona defender was linked with the Toffees. The Spanish centre back could be on the move next summer and Everton could be a possible destination.
There have been endless links to centre backs recently, despite being heavily stacked in that department. Michael Keane, Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate and Jarrad Branthwaite make up the central defence. Keane and Mina have been Rafa Benitez’s preferred centre back pairing.
Godfrey is still feeling the after-effects of COVID-19 but continues to remain in the first team dynamics amid the injury woes of Mina. On the other hand, Holgate has slipped down the pecking order and has hardly been utilized by the Spanish manager. With the aforementioned quartet remaining in the mix, the youngster Branthwaite has hardly had minutes under his belt in the senior team.
However, Benitez may still like to upgrade his current centre backs, which is why the name of Comas has been linked with a move to Merseyside. Comas plays for Barca B and is striving to work his way to the first team.
Everton target Arnau Comas may consider an offer from Premier League
Spanish outlet Marca suggests that Everton are looking to add Comas amid the uncertain fitness of Mina who has had a reputation of being injury prone. Comas is one of the most promising talents emerging from La Masia and has attracted the attention of Everton and Leicester City. Spanish journalist Santi Ovalle thinks that Comas’ mind could change if a multi-million dollar offer arrives from a Premier League team.
"(Comas) He has received interest from Leicester and Everton. The footballer wants to exhaust his options to succeed at Barça, but the time has come to take a step forward. He has a contract until 2022, extendable to two more optional seasons, but the Million dollar offers from the Premier League can make you change your mind. (via Marca)"
By the looks of it, Holgate doesn’t seem to win the trust of Benitez and could be expendable. Branthwaite could see himself heading out on loan for regular playing time and honing his skills. Hence, Comas does seem an option that can be evaluated.
However, any upgrades in the centre back area can be delayed till next summer. In the upcoming winter transfer window, the priority should be to improve the injury hit departments like the midfield and the attack.
Should Everton consider signing Arnau Comas next summer?
