A midfield three could help Everton gain more control in the middle of the park

Rafa Benitez may also choose to tinker with the formation and the shape against Liverpool. In such a case, 4-3-3 could be a preferable option. Richarlison, Gray and Townsend lead the attack meanwhile an additional man could slot into the midfield to match Liverpool’s number in the midfield.

Delph could be the most likely option to play at the base of the midfield three, allowing Allan and Doucoure a bit more attacking freedom. Delph’s addition will give Everton a bit more control in the midfield and help Everton battle the midfield three of Liverpool.

Another advantage of playing in 4-3-3 is that Allan will not have the responsibility to patrol in front of the defence and he can make press breaking runs forward. When the Reds attack, he can help Delph in mopping up and winning the ball back. Doucoure will perhaps enjoy the most in this formation as he can have unconditional freedom of surging forward and making runs in the box.

In attack, Gray and Townsend can stretch the Liverpool defence and aim for Richarlison in the middle. This formation could see Anthony Gordon miss out but it may be the cost Rafa Benitez will be willing to pay for midfield stability.
