Everton need their key players to step up
Everton have been missing their key players for weeks now and while Richarlison and Abdoulaye Doucoure have returned, the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina remain unavailable. Winning the Merseyside derby looks an impossible task at the moment.
Losing the tie wouldn’t matter at this point, what would matter is if they lose in the right way, showing passion and grit in the Everton performance. If the Toffees are to turn up against Liverpool and stand a chance to muster a result, few players will have to lead from the front and step up.
Here are there players who need to step up against Liverpool
1. Andros Townsend
Andros Townsend had a shocker against Brentford. He misplaced passes, his crosses were lacking accuracy and his overall performance was substandard. The former Crystal Palace man has a firing start to the season but as the storm of poor results hit, Townsend’s form has also waned off.
He will want to bounce back after a forgetful afternoon in Brentford. The experienced player is capable of supplying some delicious balls into the box for Richarlison to attack. Townsend brings the experience on the table and he will be expected to take a leader’s role in such an intense game.
His battle with Andy Robertson will be interesting to watch. Townsend is a meticulous worker in defence and remains disciplined in pressing and tracking back. If he can step up and deliver inviting crosses, Everton may stand half a chance of scoring and getting a result.
