Taking a break again from the derby build-up, according to media sources today Everton are looking at a young Spanish left-back Sergio Gomez.

The report state that Everton were actively scouting at a recent match where Gomez excelled for the Belgian side he currently plays for and that he was the likely focus.

The Spaniard is a player who seems to have plenty of qualities which would be of interest to any side wanting addiitonal attacking width and creativity.

Full-back is one position where the Blues certainly need more options and once again despite the urgent need for a long-term replacement for Seamus Coleman, the club failed to bring another player in during the summer.

A left-back wasn’t one of the players who had been a priority prior to this campaign and the Toffees’ had an international left-back in Lucas Digne and a young player Niels Nkounkou who had impressed last season and was also available to deputise.

Then talented youth team full-back Thierry Small decided not to sign a professional contract and left the club and Everton let Nkounkou go on loan for the season leaving incoming manager Rafa Benitez without a reserve left-back!

Digne has frankly been playing below his best for a while now and the absence of any competition hasn’t helped this situation and means that the team haven’t seen the best of the former Barcelona star for a long time.

So, having been in a position of relative strength on that side of the defence and the prioruty being the other full-back position, the Blues’ need depth at left back too.

The January transfer window loos and while it is clear that Everton need an injection of new talent in a number of areas, I don’t think left full-back is going to be a priority.

Instead there will be a focus on midfield and finding another attacking talent to supplement summer signings Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray.
