In the summer of 2020, Everton were in close contact with Brazilian winger Everton Cebolinha. In fact, then manager Carlo Ancelotti personally called the forward to convince him to come to Merseyside. In the end, the Toffees missed out as Soares joined Benfica for a deal worth £18 million.

All is not rosy for Soares in Benfica. Nicknamed Cebolinha, the 25 year old has recently dropped out of manager Jorge Jesus’ plans, warming the bench in three games out of last four in the Liga NOS. This season, Cebolinha has played 25 games which include 14 starts, scoring four goals and providing five assists.

Primarily a left winger, the former Gremio star has featured in every position across the frontline which has brought out the player’s manager Marcio Cruz to criticize the Benfica boss for not giving his client a run of games and playing him out of position. Cruz indicated that if this continues, the player could ponder upon a move away.

"If this continues, we’ll have to take the player out of there, so that Benfica doesn’t suffer. If it’s not to put him in his position, then don’t put him as a wingman. Jorge Jesus is killing a player that Benfica paid for 20 million euros. When Everton is gaining confidence and improving, he takes him off the team. (via Terra)"

Everton following Everton Cebolinha of Benfica

The situation has sparked rumours of Cebolinha wanting out of the Portuguese club. For a skillful winger like Soares, there are always admirers. Back in 2019, Cebolinha lit up the stage with his fiery performances in Copa America which paved way for his slingshot to prominence, eventually helping him land a transfer to Europe.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, the 25 year old is being followed by three clubs in Europe. Italian giants AC Milan are following the player since 2019 meanwhile Everton are also interested in the namesake. Borussia Dortmund are also named as potential suitors making it an early three horse race.

With the relationship between the Benfica manager and Cebolinha deteriorating and the January transfer window on the cusp, the Brazilian may try to force his way out if the situation doesn’t improve.

Everton are one of the interested parties but how are the finances going to be managed remains a million dollar question. The Portuguese side will want to generate a profit on Cebolinha and the Toffees are running on razor thin margins because of the Profit and Sustainability rules.

Rafa Benitez added Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend but the Spaniard desired to have another winger in the squad. Dwight McNeil and Leon Bailey were linked but neither of the moves materialized. If the finances have been unlocked, Everton may push for the winger who adds flair and pace on the flanks.
