Everton: 5 players Everton could offload to free up £9.4 million in wages
5. Jean-Philippe Gbamin
Jean-Philippe Gbamin is another player whose Everton career has been destroyed by injuries. In his first two seasons, the 26 year old has just recorded 146 minutes of footballing action. The Ivorian is not trusted by Rafa Benitez which has been evident by his selections. Even when choosing players to come off the bench, the Spaniard has preferred Tom Davies or Andre Gomes rather than Gbamin.
Everton have already informed him that he is free to leave in the winter transfer window with a loan move lining up. Interest is there from Italy and Germany but there is nothing concrete. AS Roma have studied the option to take him on a six month loan deal as Jose Mourinho wishes to strengthen the Giallorossi midfield.
With the Toffees hoping to seal the signing of a midfielder, Gbamin could further see himself drop down the pecking order. Longstaff is Benitez’s favourite and if the Newcastle man does sign for the Merseysiders, Gbamin could be forced to search a new team if he hopes of getting some minutes under his belt.
Gbamin was signed in 2019 from Mainz 05 for £25 million. He signed a five year deal, earning £75,000 per week which is £3.9 million net per season. If Everton can manage to secure a loan deal for Gbamin, who is a fringe player at this point, they can reduce another £1.95 million in the wage book for this season.
If the half yearly wages are totaled (2.86m+ 1.79m +0.39m +2.44m +1.95m) it amounts to £9.43 million in just half yearly wages. This will allow the Toffees to spend few extra bucks to bring in quality players if needed and also hand them competent salary.
