At last some positive news at Everton this week as Lewis Dobbin finally committed himself to the club by signing a new three and a half year contract at the club.
Dobbin has actually been available to speak to clubs outside the Premier League since January 1st with his previous contract expiring in the summer, but fortunately for Everton Dobbin has now signed a new deal.
Hot prospect Dobbin has been on the watchlist of clubs like Bayern Munich since he has been on the fringes of first team from last season.
This season has fleetingly seen Dobbin on the pitch in first team action this season with Rafa Benitez preferring Solomon Rondon to start instead.
With this selection producing hardly any success fans have been clamouring for Dobbin and other young striker Ellis Simms to be involved more. This was enforced against Chelsea away when Simms started and Dobbin came off the bench when Everton only had 18 total players available for selection.
Dobbin also made an appearance off the bench in the FA Cup third round tie at Hull City in extra-time, but once again he was limited to playing a bit part.
Evertonians, as with many other decisions, were getting increasingly frustrated that Dobbin may be lost to a pre-contract agreement as his chances of playing in the first team seemed to be limited.
Interestingly Dobbin has signed his new contract while Everton don’t have a first team manager or a Director of Football, which may suggest Benitez was hardly helping the youngsters’ development and belief that his future lies at Everton.
Dobbin was an unused substitute during Everton’s one nil defeat to Aston Villa last weekend and then produced the winning goal in the Under 23’s one nil win over Spurs on Monday night. As you can see below he scored a good header, not something he is renowned for, from new signing Nathan Patterson’s right wing cross:
Now with Simms having joined Scottish Premiership side Hearts on loan until the end of the season, Dobbin has one less challenger to a first team attacking spot. One advantage Dobbin has over Rondon is his ability to play on the left hand side of the attack as well as in the centre.
It may well be the new Everton manager, whoever that maybe, could prefer Dobbin to be second choice behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Rondon hardly has put his case forward in the last few months too strongly.
At least this new contract for Dobbin gives Evertonians some positive news in an otherwise chaotic week full of protests, banners and bizarre recruitment procedures from those in control of the club.
