Everton had an immensely fruitful January transfer window. In terms of incoming transfers, there are hardly any complaints but when it comes to outgoings and offloading players, many thought that Everton would have more outgoings than just Lucas Digne. Cenk Tosun was one player expected to leave.

The Turk striker was not in Rafa Benitez’s regular plans nor is he to feature in Frank Lampard’s plans. Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are starters and absolute untouchables. Salomon Rondon and Lewis Dobbin fill in for the backup role, leaving Tosun without much game time.

The 30 year old’s contract expires in June and the winter transfer window was an opportunity to move the Turk and save some wages. In fact, PSV Eindhoven and Hull City were keen to sign Tosun but he rejected their advances. His heart was set out on a return to Besiktas, the club where he prospered and produced his best performances.

Tosun has been underwhelming throughout his spell at Everton and found it difficult to find his footing in England. 11 goals in 60 appearances do not paint an impressive picture and offloading Tosun as soon as possible would have been on Everton’s agenda.

Everton striker Cenk Tosun was open to a Besiktas return

According to Turkish outlet Sabah, Tosun was open to joining Besiktas. Besiktas wanted to reinforce their attack and are open to bringing Tosun back to the club. When asked about the player’s desire, Tosun expressed to Besiktas that he wants to leave Everton but to stay in Europe.

Tosun wanted €1 million of his half season salary to leave Everton. The Turk pockets €3 million annually at the Merseyside outfit. Tosun dreams of making a return to the Turkish national football team and is keen to play in the World Cup play off games in March.

Turkey will face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and Tosun wants to help his national side and in order to remain in contention for a national team call up, the 30 year old wants to go to a side where he can play regular football. Tosun also wanted a two and a half year contract at Besiktas with a financial package of €2.5 million a year.

Is Cenk Tosun departure from Everton still possible?

Technically, a transfer is still possible. Even though the transfer window in England has slammed shut, the transfer window in Turkey remains open until 8th February. So, while Everton cannot sign any players, they can still sanction outgoing transfers.

Besiktas have time until 8th February to formulate a deal and bring Tosun back to his homeland. Furthermore, Kara Kartallar will have to negotiate personal demands with Tosun. Given Tosun’s desire to play regular football and Besiktas’ need to reinforce the attack, a transfer could eventually happen but Besiktas will have to adhere to Tosun’s demands.
