After bringing in their latest new manager in Frank Lampard, Everton are being linked with a move for a new Technical Director.

According to reports floating around, Everton are considering hiring ex-Tottenham executive Steve Hitchen who has just resigned from his job at Spurs.

Ever since Marcel Brands left the Toffees back in December, there have been rumours the club will move to replace him in some way.

Brands was fired as the Blues Director of Football after a behind-the-scenes power struggle with then manager Rafa Benitez.

The two men hadn’t seen eye-to-eye over player recruitment and with results on the pitch going wrong, supporters were getting increasingly angry with the latest failures and the board was the primary target of their ire.

The Dutchman lost that internal battle and was removed from his post strengthening Benitez’s position and enabling him to get rid of a player he had also fallen out with; Lucas Digne, who left Everton early in the transfer window.

In the end though, despite holding on for nearly a month more, Benitez was eventually sacked when his position (which had in truth been untenable for weeks) finally came to an end after the Norwich City defeat.

Now, Lampard is in post and begininning the latest re-building project at Goodison Park while facing a tough challenge to keep the Blues up at the end of the season.

While the recruitment of Lampard seemed as hit and miss as usual, there is supposed to be a strategic review being conducted by the club to get the right people in and chart a new and hopefully successful course.

Part of that review includes looking into whether the Toffees need another Director of Football or something like it and if so who that might be.

The last two hired to do that type of job by Farhad Moshiri, Brands and his predecessor Steve Walsh, haven’t exactly been unqualified successes like his choices of head coach.

So, again as with the new manager, this decision needs to be made carefully and has to be the right one for the club.

Tim Cahill is being brought into the club’s hierachy in some capacity although exact details of his role are not yet clear, and so we come to the reports today which claim that Everton are considering Hitchen, presumably for a post like that of Technical Director.

There are stories that Hitchen left Spurs under a cloud and seems to be regarded by some fans as a key reason for the relative failure of the club in recent seasons.

Well, I don’t know if these accusations have any basis, but perhaps it’s worth the club taking more time to find the right person for this position. Recent past history would indicate that’s a good idea.
