3. Lampard buys into Everton ethos

I was unsure whether Frank Lampard would be the right choice as Everton manager as it became increasingly clear that he was likely to get the job.

His background coming from the Southeast of England and playing for two London teams meant I felt he wasn’t an ideal fit for a club from the Northwest with a very strong, traditionally working class culture.

But, since he first took over and based in the evidence of yesterday too, he has shown that he seems to get it and understands what Everton is about.

Lampard has talked about all the right sorts of things from the off, such as his players recognising the central importance of relentless commitment and hard work and the passionate determination to do their best every time they pull on that royal blue shirt.

He also seemed to connect straight away with the supporters (witness the response from the stands) who have become so disconnected from the club, board and previous manager.

Once more, it’s only one game but the signs are very positive that perhaps Lampard is the right man for this difficult but potentially hugely rewarding role.
