Fabian Delph has played a key part in Everton’s recent form reversal

Fabian Delph missing games for Everton due to injuries had become a common sight. So much so, that after a point, his absence was hardly noticeable. Missing numerous games due to illness or injury has been the recurring theme of Delph’s story at Everton. This season, the Englishman has missed a total of 25 games.

Last season, the match miss counter ticked 29 times for Delph. A season prior to that, he was unavailable for 22 games, taking the total to 76 games missed due to injury since signing for Everton. He has made 40 appearances in three seasons, meaning he’s ended up missing more games than he has played in the royal blue jersey.

The forgotten man is nearing the end of his three year deal and is set to become a free agent in the summer. There have been no indications from Everton over a renewal for Delph. With the 32 year old finally being fit and available, Delph would be hoping to end his association with the Toffees on a healthy note, finishing on a high.

After recovering from the hamstring injury, Delph’s services have been available at Frank Lampard’s disposal. In four games under Lampard, the 32 year old has amassed 335 minutes of football and is emerging as a favourite in the holding midfield role over Allan.

Fabian Delph has been preferred over Allan in the holding midfield role

After the relegation six pointer loss to Burnley, the Toffees feared that doomsday was near. Everton had no momentum and the players were struggling to put together performances that can drive them to safety. A strong reaction was needed against Manchester United.

Lampard started Delph against the Red Devils and the Englishman didn’t disappoint. He provided a solid base in the midfield while also spraying passes from the middle. Delph made six clearances, two interceptions and was not dribbled past throughout 84 minutes he was present on the pitch. The Royal Blues secured a much needed victory, aiding their fight in the relegation scrap.

Delph started the tie against Leicester and played the entire 90 minutes of a game for the first time since November 2020. Deployed in a holding midfield role, the former Manchester City man racked up another impressive performance, building on his strong display against United.

On the back of two spectacular performances, Lampard started him against Chelsea. Tuchel’s men were rattled by Everton and Delph once again passed the test with flying colours. With each performance, the midfielder won accolades even from the harshest critics.

Seven points out of a possible ten meant that the Toffees had responded to the cries of fans for brave and dedicated displays which eventually translated into success on the pitch. The Leicester City away tie was a crucial one as Burnley had lost their tie a night ago giving the Toffees a golden chance to jump out of the relegation zone with a win against the Foxes. But, the away record has been a huge dent in Everton’s season and prior to the game at King Power Stadium, Everton had just managed six points in 16 away games.

Lampard must continue to rely on Fabian Delph in the final few games

Lampard called Delph to deliver and he did as the Toffees pulled off a miraculous victory over Brendan Rodgers’ side. Delph was outstanding, playing 90 minutes, running the show in the midfield, kept Everton ticking and was the nucleus of the midfield.

The Englishman had 52 touches, second most for an Everton player, had a pass accuracy of 95% and made 11 recoveries. When in possession, he was not even dispossessed once throughout the game and made a key pass.

Under Lampard, Delph has played 335 minutes out of a possible 360 which goes onto show the trust that Lampard has put in the Englishman. Relegation battles can take a toll on the psychology of players and push them into self doubt. You need experienced players like Delph to bear the burden.

The Englishman has done exactly that, he has shown his leadership skills and led the midfield allowing others around him to play with freedom. This has allowed someone like Abdoulaye Docuoure to bombard the opposition box and be present everywhere on the pitch through his tireless running.

If Everton does manage to survive this relegation battle, Delph will be one of the pioneers of the fight back amongst the players. He has been a name to which fans never really warmed upto. He has never been the ace in the Everton deck but right now he’s just doing enough to keep Everton alive in the Premier League.

Will Fabian Delph finish on a high this season?
