The recent upturn in form has seen Everton jump out of the relegation zone. Many heroes have risen like Richarlison, Alex Iwobi and Fabian Delph. One name that has been absent is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Englishman has had a torrid season due to injuries and has failed to hit the ground running.
Calvert-Lewin could only make the bench against Chelsea and Leicester City as Richarlison remained the sole striker in the side. Calvert-Lewin’s injury problems have disrupted any rhythm he had and has often struggled to make a positive impact when on the pitch.
The player’s confidence has also taken a toll it seems, with the 25 year old managing just 3 goals in 14 appearances this season. For Calvert-Lewin, he’ll be hoping to forget this season and start with a clean slate next season.
However, whether he remains at Everton or not remains a doubt. The former Sheffield United striker was terrific under Carlo Ancelotti, displaying growth and maturity last season. Calvert-Lewin scored 21 goals in 39 games last season, easily topping the goalscoring charts at Everton. He became a hot commodity and a number of clubs kept eyes on him.
Newcastle United also want Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Arsenal have been in search of a striker and have Calvert-Lewin as one of their top transfer targets. Previously, a report from Daily Mail stated that Arsenal will have to pay £60 million for the striker’s services which is quite an astronomical fee when compared to Calvert-Lewin’s market value of £40 million.
Arsenal aren’t the only side interested in the 25 year old. Newcastle United have been keeping tabs on Calvert-Lewin and with the financial backing of new owners, you’d expect them to splash some extra cash in the summer.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United have held preliminary talks with player’s entourage for a summer transfer of Calvert-Lewin. Though, the player’s first choice remains Arsenal, as per the report.
Calvert-Lewin is capable of producing 20 plus goal season consistently but needs to remain fit. Prior to this injury ravaged season, Calvert-Lewin had managed to keep himself fit for the most part of his playing career.
However, Everton manager Frank Lampard doesn’t seem to be open to the idea of letting his prized asset leave and has fired a warning to Arsenal and other interested clubs. If Everton manage to survive the relegation battle, Lampard will want Calvert-Lewin to head the attack and start a new era at Goodison Park.
"He is a fantastic striker, a pedigree striker and there are simply not that many around. He has three years left on his contract, and I want to take this club forward. A player of Dominic’s can help that – he is our player and that’s it He has not said anything to me like that, he trains well, we communicate a lot and he’s not said anything.I’m not silly – this is football, so I am aware of the way things can go. He’s a player that would be wanted by clubs because of the level of player like I just said, there are not many strikers out there, they cost a lot of money.I’m not worried about him at all. I wouldn’t be worried to play him in these games or whatever. He is absolutely focused on the job. Dominic’s been a big player for Everton, and Everton have been big for him in his career, so that should be the story. (via Express)"
In football, things can take a sharp turn at any instance but as of now it feels that any idea of Calvert-Lewin leaving will be met with Everton’s resistance.
Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin remain on Everton’s roster next season?
