Everton recently extended Asmir Begovic’s stay for one more season which did cast doubt on the future of Joao Virginia. The Portuguese keeper spent the 2021-22 season out on loan at Sporting.

Virginia was always regarded as a player for the future and when he got a chance to impress in the Everton shirt, he did not disappoint. When Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen were unavailable, Virginia played 47 minutes of Premier League football against Burnley and started an FA Cup tie against Manchester City. In those 130 odd minutes, the youngster showed glimpses of his potential.

With playing time difficult to come by at Everton as a third choice keeper, Virginia joined Sporting on loan with the Portuguese side having the option to make the move permanent for €5 million.

During his loan spell, Virginia has played second fiddle to Antonio Adan, playing a total of eight games in the season. He conceded seven goals and kept four clean sheets. Virginia failed to become the first choice but with Adan now 35, Sporting see Virginia as the future.

Everton to meet Sporting to discuss a deal about Joao Virginia

According to O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Sporting officials are set to meet Everton to discuss the future of Virginia. The Portuguese giants want to keep Virginia for longer and they are set to initiate new talks for the 22 year old. The meeting this week is considered very important in determining the player’s future for the upcoming season.

The loan deal included a buy option but so far Sporting have not activated the clause. The Lions want to sign him permanently but are sceptical about paying a sum of €5 million to the Toffees. Everton have no intention to budge from its valuation and does not want to give any discount on the €5 million fees.

The Merseysiders are in no hurry to sell him and will wait for a suitable offer. If Sporting wants Virginia they will need to have strong points to convince Everton and reach an amount for the purchase of the 22 year old.

If a deal is not locked with Sporting, Virginia may head out on another loan or possibly be sold to some other club which is willing to match Everton’s valuation. The Portuguese may not have an immediate future at the club as Pickford remains Everton’s first choice.

Till the time Begovic remains at the club, Virginia cannot even become Everton’s second choice. Hence, either cashing in on him or sending him out on another loan seems to be the only solution available on the table.

Where will Joao Virginia play next season?
