Alex Iwobi seems to be the most improved player at Everton under Lampard

Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi hasn’t lived up to the expectations since his arrival on the 8th of August 2019, mostly featuring as a substitute, and even when given the game-time wasn’t able to justify his £34 million price tag. However, since the arrival of Frank Lampard at Goodison Park, the former Arsenal winger looks rejuvenated, often deployed as a wing-back in the 3-4-3 formation which was prominently used by Lampard this season.

The Nigerian star showed his improvement in the run-in, providing an assist in the important 2-1 win against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium and won the man of the match with a rating of 8.06 in the game against Watford. His injury time winner against Newcastle United was one of the most crucial moments and without that win, the Toffees would have been in dire troubles in the relegation batle.

Iwobi has scored 2 goals and provided 2 assists in the Premier League and his defensive actions per 90 have improved significantly after playing as a wing-back. Applying 22.95 pressures, making 1.99 blocks, 2.03 tackles, and 1.77 interceptions per 90. (stats via FBref)

Iwobi’s importance in Lampard’s side can be seen in the minutes he has played, featuring in all the games of the run-in, playing 90 minutes in all of those matches.
