Everton, along with Premier League rivals Newcastle and Leeds United, have joined the race for Argentine striker Valentin Castellanos, according to more reports today.

The transfer rumour mill is in full swing now and Everton are being frantically linked with an ever growing list of potential new players.

This latest speculative story claims the Toffees’ are interested in the 21-year-old New York City striker who has impressed in the MLS recently.

Castellanos is a player who is on Manchester City’s books and has been on loan in the States. But, despite his productive recent campaign, the Premier League champions having just signed Nowegian superstar Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, are happy for him to move on.

The forwards are one group of Blues’ players from whom we are very likely to see departures this summer with speculation rife about the future of both Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

In addition, the outcome of Moise Kean’s loan back to Juventus is still uncertain and so moves for fresh forward talent may well be forced on Frank Lampard.

Regarding Richarlison while I do want him to stay at Goodison Park, if a big offer (say around £60 million or so) were to come in, could Everton really turn it down given the huge financial constraints Lampard is under this summer?

The same logic applies with Calvert-Lewin, although I would be more inclined to consider selling the England international anyway as he’s not made such a big contribution to the team as the Brazilian over the last year or so.

If one or other or even both of these forwards was to depart Merseyside with Cenk Tosun also leaving as his contract finishes this summer then the Blues’ would be left with only Salomon Rondon and possibly Ellis Simms as frontline strikers.

That might mean then, along with all the other pressing needs at centre-back and in midfield, the Toffees’ may need reinforcement up front too.

Again as with so many of these player links I have no idea if there is anything at all to this story about Castellanos, but I doubt it.

Regardless, Everton look like they could well be juggling an unenviable number of competing priorities over the course of a very busy summer.
