Gylfi Sigurdsson has been Everton’s most expensive signing

5. Gylfi Sigurdsson

Lastly, the signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson can also be considered as one of the worst deals sanctioned by Moshiri. The Icelandic international was signed from Swansea City for a record fee of £45 million which till date stands as the most money spent by Everton on a player.

On top of that, the attacking midfielder was handed a five year lavish contract of £100,000 per week, making him one of the top earners at the club. Sigurdsson was a strange signing given that Everton acquired four No.10s in that transfer window.

While Rooney was a bit of a sentimental signing, the Toffees could have been way better without dishing out huge sums of money on Sigurdsson, Vlasic and Klassen. As a result, Sigurdsson had less minutes and his form suffered.

Being on such high wages and one of the most creative players in the side, one would expect the Icelandic to make a significant impact in games and get Everton out of cagey situations but he rarely had those kinds of flawless games and was often caught on the back foot.

Sigurdsson’s pace often made him vulnerable and he was overrun by the opposition. Even though he had technique, his lack of pace didn’t help him and he often looked knackered after during the busy run of fixtures.

For a £45 million fee, the Toffees would’ve expected better service and playmaking from Sigurdsson.
