Everton are facing a lot of questions about which players will stay this summer and which players will be placed on the market but one thing’s certain that Jordan Pickford is a crucial part of the team and will remain in the future too.

Though the club faces incredible financial struggles and have lacked stellar play as of late, Jordan Pickford has been a bright spot for the Toffees. He was brought to the squad in 2018 from Sunderland for £25 million and he has made quite an impact since his arrival. The 28-year old Englishmen has two years left on his contract but Everton view right now as the perfect time to extend that further.

According to The Guardian, Everton are ready to offer a contract extension to Pickford. They are set to open talks very soon to tie him down to a long term future at the club.

Pickford kept seven clean sheets last season and kept a save percentage of over 65%. He had his best season in 2020-21 under Carlo Ancelotti where he only allowed 39 goals in his 31 matches and saved over 70% of the shots coming his way.

Jordan Pickford is now considered a senior player at Everton

What is even more impressive is that Pickford has only allowed seven goals in his last 15 matches with the English national team. His excellent performance helped England qualify for a world cup spot and the team has only lost one game during that 15 game span.

Pickford is no longer seen as a young player in the Everton squad but as a senior player with experience. Renegotiating his contract two years in advance will likely help the team control their finances and reiterate their faith in Pickford.

Everton does not have many options behind Pickford at the keeper. Asmir Begovic is serving as a backup but won’t stake a claim to the No.1 spot and Joao Virginia is a prospect who might not stay in town much longer.

The decision to extend Pickford’s deal will provide stability at the last line of defence for many years and ensure Lampard can focus his efforts to improve the squad at other positions. Expect to hear the contract has been inked within a few weeks.
