Wolves midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White of interest to Everton
As Everton continue their search for reinforcements in the middle of the park, another new name, Wolves’ Morgan Gibbs-White, is apparently on the radar of manager Frank Lampard.
The 22-year-old was on loan at Sheffield United last season and so it seems as though he could be surplus to requirements at Molineux and maybe available for transfer, with Everton supposedly interested in him.
Gibbs-White is yet another in a seemingly endless collection of attacking players to be linked with a move to Goodison Park this summer.
The latest and strongest rumours concern Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard who is now a free agent and looking for a new club.
The Toffees’ have regularly been reported to be one of his potential suitors and now once again the Blues’ are strongly linked with a move for the England international.
While Lingard has his supporters, I’m not convinced that Everton should look to add to their ranks another former England attacker whose game has fallen away dramatically in the last few seasons.
After all the Toffees’ have already signed one such player in Dele Alli who arrived on deadline day last January just after Lampard was installed as the new manager.
Alli hasn’t exactly lit up Goodison Park yet and while there is still a chance he may rediscover his best form in an Everton shirt, there’s no guarantee that will happen.
Given the fact he and Lingard are very similar sorts of player and the United star will likely have very considerable wage demands, I’m not certain it’s wise move for the Blues’.
Of course if Everton were to get the player who proved such a good addiiton to West Ham United’s side the season before last then they would have a quality addition to their squad.
The Hammers are one of several other clubs wooing Lingard and it remains to be seen whether he would prefer a return to the London Stadium.
Wolves player Gibbs-White is much younger and has some considerable strengths. In particular, his ability to create chances as well as his goal-scoring record and additionally he can occupy a number of attacking positions too.
That ability to operate in several posiitons might be very useful too allowing Lampard to play more flexible tactics. For example, Gibbs-White was most productive playing wide on the right or at centre-forward.
Again, Im not sure if he’s going to be able to replicate that form in the Premier League. But, with Everton focusing on bringing in younger players who can also represent a potential sell-on value and Lampard’s reputation for developing them, might he be a better long-term option than Lingard?
