Reports are claiming that Everton have revived an attempt to sign Burnley’s Maxwell Cornet, although there are also other Premier League clubs interested in him.

Cornet is a sought after talent who has inevitably been rumoured and linked with moves to another club since the Clarets relegation at the end of last season. Everton were one of those alledged suitors.

Of course, the Toffees’ have already brought in one of Cornet’s former team-mates after James Tarkowski officially became an Everton player, a few weeks ago.

An Ivory Coast international, Cornet is quite a highly-rated and versatile footballer who had a fine campaign last season despite Burnley’s struggles.

He notched nine goals in the Premier League, an impressive total in such a poorly performing side and was a real threat to opposition teams, even while often operating in a left or wing-back type position.

He also scored the winner against the Blues’ in that 3-2 defeat at Turf Moor back in early April that contributed hugely to putting Everton in serious relegation trouble.

Of course, after the usual twists and turns of fortune the Toffees’ survived and it was Burnley themselves who untimately went down along with Watford and Norwich.

Cornet looks like a player who might be worth a punt, if he’s available for a reasonable fee say around £15 million. He adds pace, creativity and goals, all things Everton really need a lot more of.

To be honest, I think a move for him might be more worthwhile than pursuing Wolves’ Morgan Gibbs-White, who the Blues’ are apparently still trying to sign despite already having had a sizable bid (rumoured to be around £25 million) turned down.

I don’t want the Blues’ to be held to ransom by the Midlands club. If they are demanding a ridiculous amount for a young player uproven in the Premier League, then the Toffees’ should walk away and look at alternatives. Maybe Cornet could be one of them.
