It looks as though Everton are about to add two new midfielders to their squad and rumours claim another defender is also on Frank Lampard’s radar.

As I write, moves for Idrissa Gueye and perhaps more surprisingly Amadou Onana are inching closer to completion. Now, Everton are being strongly linked with a move for Wolves Conor Coady.

The former England centre-back is unsure of his long-term future at Molineux as manager Bruno Lage experiments with new defensive formations.

According to reports, Wolves are still keen to keep the 29-year-old but won’t stand in his way if he wants a move to ensure he is the thoughts of England boss Gareth Southgate as the World Cup approaches.

That might mean a loan move to the Blues’, although it’s all speculative at the moment and no deal appears imminent.

Coady is a very solid and experienced centre-back who has regularly played for his country over recent seasons. And, Lampard is a firm admirer of the Liverpool-born player.

He has also often operated in a back three, which is what Wolves have generally played for the past few campaigns and seems very comfortable doing so.

Given that Lampard is likely to go with that formation this season, this together with his obvious defensive qualities is why the Toffees’ manager is keen to bring him to Goodison Park.

Personally, I wouldn’t object to a loan deal for the player and he would certainly further strengthen the defensive resiliance and nous of this Everton team.

However, bringing Coady in would mean the Blues’ had six centre-backs on their books, which does seem a little excessive.

Presumably, one or other of those defenders (most likely to be either Micheal Keane or Mason Holgate) would be surplus to requirements and might well leave the club before the transfer window shuts.

This surfit of options at the back is in huge contrast with the forward area where Everton have a desperate paucity of choices.

So, while a deal for Coady and the two midfielders will certainly improve the squad, the Toffees’ must now focus on bringing in another forward who can score goals as a matter of urgency.
