Everton have been tasked with replacing Richarlison who left for Tottenham Hotspur. The Toffees have been linked to the likes of Maxwel Cornet and Armando Broja. Now, Everton have made contact with Barcelona forward Memphis Depay who is looking for a new club this summer.

Richarlison was Everton’s top scorer last season with 10 Premier League goals. Replacing him would be a challenging task and Everton are still in the process to sign a player who can succeed the Brazilian. The Merseysiders need a forward who can support Dominic Calvert-Lewin and share the goalscoring load.

Depay is a name that has loosely circulated in the Everton circles. The Dutchman signed for Barcelona last summer on a two year deal, with an option to extend for the third year. In what was a rebuilding year for Barcelona, Depay performed well. He didn’t steal the headlines but did not underwhelm either.

This summer, Barcelona went on to sign Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and even extended Ousmane Dembele’s contract. With the new arrivals and already present attackers, Depay has now been told to find a new club this summer as his contract will not be extended.

Everton make contact with Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay

With a versatile attacker like Depay available, clubs across Europe are scrambling to sign the former Manchester United man. According to Spanish publication Sport (via Sport Witness), Barcelona want to offload Depay on first priority and do now want to let him go on a free transfer next summer.

Among the interested clubs is Everton who have approached the 28 year old. The player’s entourage has met with the Barcelona hierarchy and it is clear that the club will not offer any extension to the former Lyon forward. From England, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have also approached the player along with Everton.

However, the most interested party is Juventus. The 28 year old likes the idea of playing for the Bianconeri and the two parties are in talks. The Blaugrana will not have a huge transfer fee demand but Juventus will have to offer a competitive salary to the Dutchman. The Old Lady want to take him on a loan deal but it is unlikely that Barca will sanction such a deal.

On the other hand, Everton do not have realistic chances of landing Depay. Firstly, they cannot compete with the likes of Chelsea and Juventus on monetary front given the feeble financial situation. Secondly, Depay is only willing to leave Barcelona to join a top club that can offer European football to him.

Sadly, the Toffees are nowhere close to offering European football which probably rules out Everton as an option.
