The rumor mill continues to spin as it is being reported by The Times journalist Paul Joyce that Everton have just rejected a £45 million bid from Chelsea for academy standout Anthony Gordon.
The rumours of Gordon leaving his boyhood club for Champions League football have been moving at lightspeed ever since the first reported bid on the 15th of August. From commenting on Reece James’ Instagram to not signing the contract he was reportedly offered three weeks ago, all signs that the 21-year old maybe look for greener pastures in West London.
It is believed that the club are hoping to put this behind them, with the rumours (via @_pauljoyce) that Everton are hoping this rejected bid will stop Chelsea’s interest in the Toffees academy graduate.
Everton have rejected the bid and are looking for a figure in excess of 50 million. However, according to journalist Alex Crook Chelsea are still pushing to sign Gordon which could see the club make their third £50 million-plus signing along with Raheem Sterling and Marc Cucurella.
Everton reject Chelsea bid for Anthony Gordon
Chelsea could look to include players in the deal, with Everton being rumoured with players such as Conor Gallagher, Armando Broja, Billy Gilmour and Michy Batshuayi throughout this transfer window. Where Chelsea could go with this is unknown, with the only information being given to us yesterday that Chelsea would be willing to include players in the deal to get it over the line.
Chelsea have a few players who could offer a new dynamic and even an instant improvement in the squad. Players such as Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi could both offer Everton an instant replacement for Gordon, and the age difference wouldn’t be an issue for the Toffees with Pulisic being 23 and Hudson-Odoi still only 21.
Hudson-Odoi especially has been rumoured with a move, mainly to the Bundesliga with Borrusia Dortmund, but there have also been rumours about his possible involvement in Chelsea’s attempts to sign Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana. It seems like Chelsea no longer see a future at the club for Hudson-Odoi, and there’s no reason Everton shouldn’t try to capitalise on a player who was once having £70 million bids from Bayern Munich rejected.
@Paddy_Boyland has written for The Athletic stating that the club are adamant that Anthony Gordon is not for sale even after the approach from Chelsea, but the two-time Champions League winners have shown this Summer that they will do anything to get the players they want and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a bid exceeding the £50 million mark being reported very soon.
Will Anthony Gordon end up joining Chelsea?
