With just over two days to go before the transfer window shuts Everton continue to be speculatively linked with forwards.

It has been a theme of the summer with an almost endless number of strikers being mentioned as supposed targets of Everton.

So far, only Neal Maupay has actually joined the club and with only a few hours left of the current window, time is running out for the Toffees’ to add anymore.

This is a frankly ridiculous situation for the club to be in and I’m getting seriously weary of all these ever-more unlikely series of media links while time ticks on and nothing concrete appears to happen regarding any of these players.

As I have pointed out so many times before, the Blues’ have had two months since letting Richarlison leave for Tottenham to get the forwards in they need.

It was also clear to many of us that even before the Brazilian moved to North London that Everton needed more options, creativity and goals up front.

But, they haven’t ever appeared to be in any hurry to get deals for new forwards done and  meanwhile a number of other signings have been made, some of which were a little perplexing to many Evertonians.

Now, the Toffees’ are four matches into the new Premier League season, their only new goal-scoring addition Maupay has still to play for the club and the team has only picked up two points.

Well, lets have a closer look at the latest names being circulated.

The first is Ukrainian Mykhaylo Mudryk. According to reports the Blues’ have already made a bid for the 21-year-old and had it turned down.

Apparently too, a number of other English clubs are looking at Mudryk before the transfer window closes so Everton would face strong competition is they are trying to secure this players’ signature.

The other forward being even more tentatively linked with a move to Merseyside is Leeds United’s Daniel James.

Leeds are tonight’s opponents in a game which has become even more important after the poor start to the season and the failure to hold onto three points at Brentford last Saturday.

The Welshman hasn’t made the sort of impression at Elland Road some thought he might after joining from Manchester United and Spurs’ have also been linked with a move for him.

I’m certainly not convinced that either of these two players are right for the Blues’ or even that any of these stories are founded in reality.

Everton’s transfer window has taken on an air of unreality and resembles a soap opera of ever more improbable and strange links.

But, one thing that is real is the need for goalscoring reinforcements and the fact that the club have until 11 pm on Thursday to get deals done.
