Everton had been heavily linked to winger Cody Gakpo in the latter half of the summer transfer window. Everton along with Manchester United and Leeds United were interested in Gakpo but a move never materialized and the Dutchman ended up staying at PSV.
The 23 year old has started the season in an outstanding fashion, scoring 12 goals and providing 10 assists in 15 games. Goal machine Erling Haaland is also on 22 goal contributions this season and even though there’s a difference between the Eredivisie and the Premier League, Gakpo’s numbers are truly eye catching.
The 23 year old had a sensational season last term, which was one of the factors in a number of sides being interested in Gakpo. As he has taken things to a different level this season, Gakpo continues to remain on the wish list of Everton and other sides in England.
Leeds United came increasingly close to sealing the deal for Gakpo with a transfer deadline day bid and even sending a plane to Eindhoven for Gakpo. The Dutchman ended up staying at PSV, but as things stand, his future at PSV could be in doubt.
PSV will have to sell Everton target Cody Gakpo to come out of financial troubles
According to Voetbal International (via Soccer News), PSV will need to sell either Gakpo or Ibrahim Sangare as the departure of either one is very important to tackle the financial troubles. Either of the player needs to be sold before 1st July 2023 because of the club’s delicate economic situation. PSV need to balance the books and generate money and one of the easiest ways is to sell one of its prized asset.
Everton know a thing or two about fragile financial conditions. The Toffees have been facing the brunt of poor financial management, which has altered Everton’s transfer strategy. In the summer of 2021-22 season, Everton were able to spend just £1.7 million in the transfer window. This summer, Everton’s net spend has roughly been £18 million.
The Toffees needed to sell Richarlison to balance the books and avoid any Financial Fair Play troubles. The sale went through and Everton avoided any issues.
In January or early next summer, PSV may have to sell Gakpo or Sangare, both of whom have been dazzling for the Dutch side. If Everton do remain interested in Gakpo, they will have a proper shot at signing him as PSV are not in a position to play hardball. However, the interest is growing among other teams and will continue to grow if the 23 year old keeps up this momentum.
Gakpo is valued at £31.5 million by Transfermarkt and PSV will be hoping to get the maximum possible value for the Dutchman as money is the only possible way to solve the financial problems.
