Coventry City manager Mark Robbins has been speaking about rumours of interest in his star striker Viktor Gyokeres and says there’s no chance Everton will be able to sign him in January.

There had been persistent rumours that Everton were one of several Premier League clubs who were ready to test Coventry’s resolve to keep him when next month’s transfer window opens.

Sweden international Gyokeres has been in terrific form so far this season for the Sky Blues’ and his goalscoring exploits have attracted considerable attention from England’s top flight.

However, Robbins is now saying categorically that Gyokeres is not for sale in the New Year and so the Toffees’ and any other interested parties, will have to look elsewhere.

As we all know by now Everton must prioritise bringing in forwards in the coming window or there really will be no hope for salvaging the season.

A host of names have been linked with a move to the Blues’ but as yet nothing concrete has come of any of these rumours and we are still none the wiser about who might end up moving to Merseyside next month.

Everton have also released the only recognised senior centre-forward in the squad (apart from Dominic Calvert-Lewin) with the departure of Salomon Rondon whose contract has been terminated by mutual agreement.

That only really leaves young Under-21s starlet Tom Cannon available to support Calvert-Lewin as summer signing Neal Maupay isn’t a number nine.

It is a ridiculous situation and is the consequence of the club’s dreadful failure to secure more striker signings in the summer.

Manager Frank Lampard has indicated that Calvert-Lewin might well be fit again to face Manchester City tomorrow, but that’s far from certain.

Even if he is able to play in 24 hours time his terrible injury record obviously makes it absurd to rely on him to ever be fit for any sustained period. That of course, is precisely what the Toffees’ have done.

Fai;ure to bring in at least two hopefully three forwards who can offer additional pace creativity and goals will I think almost certainly condemn Everton to relegation at the end of the campaign.
