As the days go by and new signings still seem as far away as ever, Everton are now being linked with a move for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.
This is a strange story in which media outlet 90min.com claim Everton have enquired about the Scottish international’s situation at Old Trafford.
Toffees’ fans are certainly expecting new signings during this January transfer window as the need for additions is so obvious.
However, those supporters aren’t thinking that the priority for Frank Lampard and the club is bringing in new midfield reinforcements. What is needed are forwards!
According to this report, the Blues’ are one of several Premier League clubs who have expressed an interest in the Scot.
McTominay has been a regular starter for United in reccent seasons, but new signings – particularly Casimero from Real Madrid – have meant his playing time has become more limited.
Everton have plenty of midfield options with Amadou Onana, Idrissa Gueye, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Tom Davies, Alex Iwobi and James Garner, who is coming back from injury.
There are rumours that Doucoure and Davies might still leave the club in this window, although that’s far from certain.
Regardless of that though, the need is for attacking reinforcements is getting more and more urgent as every day passes.
In terms of those attacking options, there is more news that the Blues’ are now in negotiations with McTominay’s club United, about signing 20-year-old forward Anthony Elanga.
Elanga has been a rumoured target for a while according to media sources and it does look as though the Toffees’ are serious about a deal for this player.
I’m far from sure that Elanga is a player who can improve Everton enough to represent a good use of the limited resources that the club have available.
In a few hours time the Blues’ take on Southampton at Goodison Park in a Premier League match that could see Lampard leave the club.
The outcome of that game and what does actually happen in this transfer window will go a huge way to deciding the outcome of this campaign.
