Everton will be undergoing a rebuild under Sean Dyche in the summer. The 51 year old manager wants to have a competitive squad and sign players that raise the bar of the quality. The Toffees seem to have identified Atletico Madrid left back Renan Lodi as an option to upgrade the quality of the squad.

In the summer, Everton signed Ruben Vinagre on loan to add depth to the left back department and add competition to Vitaliy Mykolenko. However, the Portuguese has just played 204 minutes of football this season as he remains to be overlooked as an option. Vinagre’s last appearance came back in November in the Carabao Cup loss against AFC Bournemouth.

Nothing has changed since Dyche’s arrival as the Sporting defender finds himself on the bench every match day. It is unlikely that Everton will exercise their buy option for Vinagre as the player has simply not hit the ground running at Goodison Park. All in all, Vinagre’s loan deal has been poor business from Everton and the player himself has failed on his return to England.

Mykolenko has had a season of ups and downs. In the first part of the season, the Ukrainian looked substandard and didn’t offer anything worthwhile when going forward. Since Dyche’s arrival, Mykolenko has tidied the left side of the rearguard and supported the left winger in attack. He and Dwight McNeil were lethal against Aston Villa, darting crosses from the left and combining superbly.

In the summer, Dyche will want to bring in another left back, who is not just an option to add depth but who can challenge Mykolenko for the starter’s role. According to Sport Witness, the Toffees are eyeing a deal for Lodi in the summer. Atletico Madrid allowed Lodi to join Nottingham Forest on loan in the summer and included a €30 million buy clause in his deal.

Lodi has made 20 appearances this season but Forest does not seem keen to trigger the buy clause. Everton are aware of the situation and are keeping a close eye on the Brazilian. Atletico Madrid are willing to negotiate a lower fee with Everton for the 24 year old left back. The Merseysiders are willing to make an offer for Lodi as Dyche’s ambitions of creating a competitive squad is clear.

Everton aren’t the only side keen on signing Lodi. Come this summer, EFC might have a transfer battle on their hands as they push to sign the Brazilian full back. As per Transfermarkt, Lodi is valued at £17.5 million and given Atletico’s desire to sell Lodi, a deal could be struck without the Los Rojiblancos creating hurdles in the process.
