Everton will push to sign a striker in the summer after their failure to add reinforcements to the attack in the January transfer window. Everton have been linked with Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku who is currently on loan at Inter Milan.
The Toffees cannot solely rely on Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score, especially after his recent injuries. The Englishman has missed more than 50% of the games this season because of injuries. Calvert-Lewin is recovering from a hamstring problem and should be available after the international break but without him, the Toffees have struggled to conjure up effective attacks.
Neal Maupay has struggled since his £15 million move to Goodison Park. The Frenchman has netted just once in 20 Premier League appearances. Ellis Simms scored a brilliant goal right in the culminating stages of the Chelsea game but he is still inexperienced to lead the attack. Sean Dyche has preferred Demarai Gray as a central option in absence of Calvert-Lewin, neglecting Maupay in the process.
Everton could sign Romelu Lukaku for a huge discount
The former Brighton man could leave Everton in the summer and the Toffees will need to sign a new forward. That is when Lukaku emerges as an option. The Belgian is on loan at Inter but the Nerazzurri are reluctant to sign him on a permanent basis. Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta has already conveyed that the 29 year old will return to Stamford Bridge after his loan deal expires.
Chelsea are planning for a future without Lukaku and will be willing to sell the forward. CFC themselves are in the hunt to sign a striker with Victor Osimhen mooted as one of the top targets.
A few days ago, Everton and Aston Villa were linked to Lukaku. Now, as per Football Insider, Chelsea are prepared to sell Lukaku in the summer for a discounted price. The Blues paid £97.5 million for him in 2021 but are willing to sell him for less than £30 million, offering more than 50% discount on the fee they paid to Inter.
Lukaku is synonymous with Everton and their fans. The Belgian has played 166 games for the Merseysiders, netting 87 goals in the process. The former Manchester United man has had an injury plagued season but he still has the capability to bully his opponents and score goals.
Given the price he’s available at, it is definitely an attractive option. The stumbling block could be Lukaku’s wages as he currently earns £325,000 per week at Chelsea. The Toffees cannot and will not pay such an exorbitant sum in wages but a middle ground could be found if all parties are willing.
