Everton could move for another Man United midfielder this summer

In yet another of the speculative transfer stories that are doing the rounds at the moment, there are claims Everton are considering a move for Manchester United’s Scott McTominay.

Reports from a generally respected source, The Athletic, indicate the Toffees could well consider bringing in the Scottish international this summer.

Last summer former Everton boss Frank Lampard raided Old Trafford for a young midfield starlet when he signed James Garner, late in the transfer window.

It wasn’t an acquisiton many expected as Garner had just spent the previous season on loan at Nottingham Forest as they gained promotion.

And the priority for what then remained of the summer window, was to add forwards who could create and score goals.

That wasn’t achieved as the Blues only brought in Neal Maupay who proved a dreadful failure managing only a single goal all season long.

And, one year on as we are about to enter another transfer window that priority remains with Everton needing to add goalscorers above all else, again.

So, rumours of the Toffees signing another midfielder wouldn’t seem to make much sense.

However, there is a case for finding a long-term replacement for Idrissa Gueye, who is past his best and had an erratic season last term.

And, according to other stories that’s what Sean Dyche is hoping to do.

McTominay though is another who could be seen as a like-for-like replacement for the former PSG enforcer, now is in his second spell at Goodison Park and approaching his mid-thirties..

The 26-year-old Scot has been a regular in the United team for a while now, but recently after so many managers have come and gone at Old Trafford he has seen his first-team opportunities decline under Erik ten Haag.

That means he might well be considering moving on this summer to pastures new.

One other possible reason why the Blues manager might be interested in him (a big if of course as always with these claims) is that he is versatile and can play at centre-half too.

Everton will need reinforcements in central defence as well this summer following the departures of Yerry Mina and Conor Coady.

Meanwhile, there are huge doubts about the futures of Michael Keane, Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate, none of whom have performed well and could and should also be moving on.

I remain to be convinced that McTominay is the answer if Dyche is looking for another midfield enforcer to take over the role Gueye has done with fitfull effectiveness since his return to Merseyside.

Other options look more attractive to be honest, including Mendy. We will see if anything else comes of this, of course.
