Everton’s Jordan Pickford has reportedly become the subject of interest from Manchester United, as they look to potentially replace David De Gea.

Everton’s financial state remains delicately balanced, and many believe they will have to sell some of their more valuable playing assets in order to strengthen the squad, with Pickford and Amadou Onana two names mentioned as possible exits.

But, while some sales will be necessary, it is essential that Everton ward off any bids for Pickford from United, or any other clubs, with Tottenham also having a long-standing interest in him.

Jordan Pickford has been one of the best players for Everton

In two incredibly difficult seasons, the goalkeeper has been one of very few positives. In the 2021/22 season, Pickford and Richarlison were the two players who did as much as anyone to keep the club up.

Saves like his phenomenal efforts in the crucial home win to Chelsea summed up what Jordan is capable of.

With the talismanic Brazilian now departed, Pickford was often the difference for Everton last season, not only with his technical ability, but also his clear affection for the club, as well as his growing leadership qualities.

In the absence of Seamus Coleman, Pickford often wore the captain’s armband, and is likely to do so more often next season, with Coleman likely to be used sparingly after signing a contract extension.

The figures being talked about are also derisibly low, with some sources quoting an offer as low as £30m. England’s number 1 is clearly worth far more, but it should take a stratospheric offer for the club to even consider selling Pickford.

Reassuringly, the player himself appears to have distanced himself for any move and seems ready to continue at Everton.

"“Jordan is very happy at Everton and very settled with his young family. He loves the club and will remain at Everton until we are told otherwise. He is excited to get back for pre-season and help push Everton up the table.” his agency CAA Stellar said in a statement yesterday."

While this will come as great comfort to Evertonians, the matter may not be entirely in Pickford’s reliable hands, and if the club were to accept any offer for him, then he would surely reconsider his position.

But Everton must harness the fact that their biggest star has pledged his future to them, not least having signed a recent contract extension, and look to build their squad around the likes of Pickford, rather than use his sale to restructure it.
