Reports today are claiming Everton have lodged a bid thought to be around £12 million for Southhampton striker Che Adams.
According to stories from the Daily Mail the Toffees have finally moved for Adams and put a concrete offer on the table for the 27-year-old Scotland international.
Everton desperately need goalscoring reinforcements before this transfer window shuts and a centre-forward who can lead the line effectively.
As I’ve said before, I think Adams can do a job for the Blues, certainly as a back-up for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while he has plenty of Premier League experience where he has scored goals too.
Signing Adams won’t excite many Everton supporters and to be honest I would prefer a better quality option such as Beto.
But in truth, I don’t see many others around who are both affordable and also likely to consider moving to Merseyside.
And, while the Toffees wait for new signing Youssef Chermiti to find his feet in English football they are going to need a solid and experienced centre-forward alongside Calvert-Lewin.
In addition, someone who can be a substitute for DCL to enable Sean Dyche to rest him and/or fill in when the former England man inevitably gets injured again.
Everton though face competition from several other Premier League outfits for the Saints forward’s services as both Fulham and Bournemouth are supposed to be interested in him.
In the meantime, the Blues travel to Aston Villa on Sunday with their goalscoring hopes largely hanging on Calvert-Lewin’s fragile shoulders.
That is assuming the manager does pick him instead of continuing to rely on Neal Maupay who has conspicously failed to show he can lead the line effectively.
I hope Dyche doesn’t consider selecting Maupay again, especially if Calvert-Lewin who had a full ninety minutes in this week’s unusual friendly against Manchester United, is fully fit.
It is time to go with the best option from the start.
Obviously, even if Adams were to sign in the next few days (unlikely) he presumably won’t be available on Sunday at Villa Park.
Whether Adams is a genuine target or not, it is crystal clear Everton must get a centre-forward and goalscorer in as the days tick by and the matches come and go.
