As we've previously noted, the Africa Cup of Nations will take away two of Everton's key players for an extended period, with both Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye set to join Senegal for the tournament.
Given the thin state of this Everton squad, manager David Moyes will be forced to rely on players who have not seen much time on the pitch this season to step in for both players. But it's Ndiaye's absence that will leave arguably the biggest hole.
That isn't to say that Moyes won't have options, because there are a few directions he can go; it's simply that those alternatives are either unproven so far this season or not a great fit for the position.
Assuming that Moyes will opt to keep most of the rest of the XI, outside of Gana, the same, let's take a look at the options and weigh in on which player makes the most sense.
Option 3: Dwight McNeil
The least preferrable option is also the one that was most recently put into the right wing position: Dwight McNeil.
The Englishman was the choice to come in for Ndiaye when he went down with a cramp against Sunderland, and McNeil proceeded to provide very little along the right side during his 29-minute cameo.
Before that appearance, there were real questions about whether or not McNeil would ever see the pitch for Everton, with reports coming out that he was looking for a move away from Merseyside in January.
Still, the substitution at the Stadium of Light suggests that McNeil is not completely off of Moyes' radar, so Toffees' fans should be preparing to see him play a role, even if he isn't in the starting lineup.
Option 2: Charly Alcaraz
Moyes has tried to fit Charly Alcaraz out on the right side before, most notably during the season-opening loss to Leeds United at Elland Road, so we know that the manager is willing to do so if he feels it's the best option.
In this case, while it is a preferred option to running McNeil out there for several weeks, it ultimately doesn't make sense as the choice.
Alcaraz's play style just doesn't suit well to the wings, as he's rather push straight ahead than try to loop around a defender. His ball skills are good, but he's at a best when he can drive forward through the middle.
In a pinch, the Argentine could do the job, but it would not be putting him in the best position to impact the matches.
Option 1: Tyler Dibling
We haven't seen much of this summer's biggest signing in a blue shirt, but Tyler Dibling is still far and away the preferred option to step in for Ndiaye.
Ideally, Moyes would have already given the youngster more time on the pitch to get him ready for what figures to be a considerable load to bear while Ndiaye is away. But as the date for AFCON closes in (the tournament starts on December 21), there aren't many matches left for Dibling to get that run up.
Dibling makes the most sense either way, though, because he is the only natural right winger of the bunch. He's technically even more so than Ndiaye, but that's a problem for another day.
He's also got considerable Premier League experience for a 19-year-old, and while that all came for a poor Southampton side last season, it's time for Dibling to step up and be an impactful player for Everton.
None of these players are likely to offer what Ndiaye can, especially given how good the Senegal international has been this season, but there's a clear top option here, and Moyes shouldn't mess around with that too much.
