Reports claim that Everton are closing in on a deal for France Under-21 star Thierno Barry, after missing out earlier in the summer on Liam Delap, with the young Villarreal forward appearing ready to give it the green light and move to Merseyside.
Adding Barry will be a step in the right direction, with the 22-year-old looking a genuine goal-scoring talent who can hopefully provide real competition to Portuguese striker Beto, the Toffees' top scorer last season.
But now there are stories that the Blues are tracking yet another young centre-forward: Millwall's Serbian striker Mihailo Ivanovic.
According to these rumours, Ivanovic would be an additional forward option, not a potential alternative to Barry, although that might change, of course, should his transfer fall through.
Ideally, the club should have three or four strikers in the first-team squad when the season kicks off, and with Yousef Chermiti possibly going out on loan, that would currently leave only two available for David Moyes to pick, after Dominic Calvert-Lewin finally left, and assuming Barry signs.
The Toffees have recently been intermittently linked with Newcastle United's veteran former England forward Callum Wilson, with the experienced former Bournemouth player getting very little playing time now under Eddie Howe. That story has gone quiet recently, though.
Serbian Ivanovic appears to fit the profile of the sort of striker Everton are looking for. He is very similar to Barry, a powerful forward, strong in the air, and could perhaps provide that focal point that Moyes is searching for.
Moyes has intimated that he will seriously consider Championship talent as he searches for players to bolster his currently paper-thin first-team squad.
However, Millwall are allegedly very reluctant to sell the Serb and will demand a big fee for him (at least by Championship standards) if they agree to do a deal.
Although possible, it seems a little unlikely that Everton are readying a bid for Ivanovic while also trying to tie up the Barry deal, although bringing in another striker after the Frenchman joins still does make sense.
